Mac classes - December 2012

Craziness! December is here already, and I can't believe how dry it's been. Last month I said "the snow will soon be flying..."; well come on already, it's time! We've got winter sports to get on with, and Mac classes to come indoors for!! On to the details:

Unfortunately, due to all the holiday festivities and such, I'm afraid I've only got time for one class this month. Apologies, but we'll get back to a full schedule in January, okay?

 For this month's one class, on Saturday, December 15th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again be offering my in-depth class on the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch. Now that the iPhone 5 has been out for awhile, it's time to revisit my class on Apple's "iDevices", since they just keep getting better. The iPhone 4S has gotten much cheaper, there's the new fourth-generation iPad (not to mention the iPad mini) and don't forget the latest redesigned iPod Touch. They all continue to set standards that the rest of the industry struggles to match. And on top of all that, iOS 6 has recently arrived as well!

Whether you've had one of these game-changers for years, are just now jumping on the "iOS" bandwagon with a new iPhone/iPad or iPad mini, or it's simply time for you to find out what all the fuss is about, this class will teach you everything you need to know about these amazing devices. Cost is $20, and it's held at the Ridgway Town Hall. No sign-up is necessary, drop-ins are welcome!

 As I said above, the regular free "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which normally takes place on the last Wednesday of every month will be canceled for this month. Please put January 30, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. on your calendar, as that will be the date of the next class.

I hope to have more exciting class news for 2013 in January as well...

Take care everyone, and have a great month!!

As always, let me know if there's something else you'd like me to consider covering in the Saturday sessions.

Mac classes - November 2012

Happy November! The holidays are just around the corner, snow will soon be flying (hopefully!), and we'll all be spending a lot more time indoors. It's a good time to learn more about your computer, eh? Hope you can join me for a class or two!! On to the details:

 On Saturday, November 17th, from 10 a.m. to noon, due to popular demand, I will once again be offering my in-depth iPhoto class. Come learn everything there is to know about Apple's powerful digital photo organization/editing program. Is it finally time to get your photo library under control, with the added bonus of learning how easy (and fun) the process can be? Well then, this is the class for you! I will be covering both the latest version (iPhoto '11) as well as the previous ('09) version. Cost for this class is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. No sign-up necessary, and it's open to drop-ins, so come if you can!

 On Saturday, November 24th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be covering Apple's amazing Pages program. In this class you will learn how to master their formidable word-processing/page layout program, which just happens to be a good deal more user-friendly (and fun to use) than Microsoft Word! Cost for this class is also $20, and it is held at the Ridgway Town Hall. As above, no sign-up is necessary, drop-ins are welcome!

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and that means this month it happens on Wednesday, November 28th from 5-7 p.m. These overview classes are held in the computer lab at the Ridgway Library. There are only eight seats available, and the Library has asked that I handle the sign ups, so give me a call at 970-417-8434 (or drop me an email) if you'd like to attend. (Be aware that first-timers take priority over anyone who has taken the class before, but there are often openings for repeaters).

There are six Macs in the computer lab, so only two of the eight attendees need their own laptops. This class is beginner-oriented, but we cover some different things every month; repeat attendees are encouraged (when there's room)!

Enjoy your November everyone, and don't forget to let me know if there's a class you'd like me to offer!!

 On Saturday, October 27th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be revisiting my in-depth class on the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch. The iPhone 4S has gotten much cheaper, then there's the new third-generation iPad, not to mention the iPod Touch, they all continue to set standards that the rest of the industry struggles to match. And on top of all that, iOS 6 has just arrived as well!

Whether you've had one of these game-changers for years, are just now jumping on the "iOS" bandwagon with a new iPhone/iPad, or it's simply time for you to find out what all the fuss is about, this class will teach you everything you need to know about these amazing devices. There are six Macs in the computer lab, so only two of the eight attendees need their own laptops. This class is beginner-oriented, but we cover some different things every month; repeat attendees are encouraged (when there's room)!

Have a lovely October everyone!

Mac Classes - September '12

Wow, how did it get to be September already?? Anyone else feel like things are getting just a little out of control in the flying-time department? Oh well, at least we have Mac classes to keep us entertained while we're flying, right? On to the details:

 On Saturday, September 15th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again be offering my popular iPhoto class.

 On Saturday, September 29th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be revisiting the topic of Social Networking. In this class I will cover Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., etc. The emphasis will be on figuring out how to navigate these wild & crazy new social fads, especially as more and more changes happen (over and over again!) on Facebook & now Google+ as well... At the same time, you'll learn how to maintain the privacy levels we all prefer. If there's interest, I will also cover the ways in which these tools can be put to use in marketing a business. Cost for this class is also $20, and it is held at the Ridgway Town Hall. As above, no sign-up is necessary, drop-ins are welcome!

Then, don't forget...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month it happens on Wednesday, September 26th from 5-7 p.m.

And here's hoping you all enjoy a gorgeous Indian Summer in the coming weeks!

Mac Classes - August '12

Wow, it's August 23rd, and I'm just now realizing that I forgot to post my August class news here! If I have an excuse (questionable, I know), it's that I was on vacation when I sent out the newsletter from MailChimp... Oh well, with any luck, there are still a few folks that follow my class news here, and will be happy to find out about the two classes I'm offering this month. Fortunately, this first one is this Saturday...

If it's not already obvious, this month is so busy that I only have time for one focused class, then the regular Overview class at the end of the month at the Library. I'm really hoping to get back to normal in September. Anyway, on to the details:

 On this Saturday, August 25th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again present my in-depth class on the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch. WIth the release of the latest iPhone supposedly coming in mid-September, I figured it was time to revisit my class on Apple's "iDevices", since they just keep getting better. The iPhone 4S, the iPod Touch, the new third-generation iPad, and now whatever they'll call the newest iPhone, they all continue to set standards that the rest of the industry struggles to match. And on top of all that, iOS 6 is just around the corner as well!

Whether you've had one of these game-changers for years, are just now jumping on the "iOS" bandwagon with a new iPhone/iPad, or it's simply time for you to find out what all the fuss is about, this class will teach you everything you need to know about these amazing devices. Cost for this class is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. Sign-up is not necessary, drop-ins are welcome!

Then, as I said, due to yet another crazy summer month of commitments, the last class of August will be...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month that means it happens on Wednesday, August 29th from 5-7 p.m.

I'll be posting September's class news soon, so stay tuned...

Mac Classes - July '12

Can you believe it? The first half of 2012 is behind us, and we're still praying for rain. Ridgway's music in the park starts Thursday, and the Farmer's Market has finally moved Town Park as well. It may be dry as a bone out there, but there's still a ton of great stuff going on all around!

As I did for June, again due to a very busy schedule, I'm going to be limited to just one Saturday class, and then the free overview class at the end of the month. Here are the specifics:

 On Saturday, July 21st, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again be offering my popular iPhoto class.

Lastly, as I said, due to very busy summer schedule, the only other class for July will be...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month that means it happens on Wednesday, July 25th from 5-7 p.m.

Take care everyone, and have a great month!!

Mac Classes - June '12

Wow, June 5th already? I'm not sure how it got to be the middle of the first week of June without me getting this newsletter out, but I guess it gives you an idea of how crazy my life is right now!

Speaking of which, there's so much going on for me this month that I'm going to be limited to just one Saturday class, and then the free overview class at the end of the month. Here are the specifics:

 Adding to the wackyness, my lone focused class this month is just four days away! On this coming Saturday, June 9th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will again present my in-depth class on the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch. It is amazing that in just five short years, Apple has built a juggernaut of a product line of "iDevices", and they just keep getting better. The iPhone 4S, the iPod Touch, and now the new third-generation iPad, they all continue to set standards that the rest of the industry struggles to match.

Then, as I said, due to a mid-month filled with weddings and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival (my favorite thing to do every year), the only other class for June will be...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month that means it happens on Wednesday, June 27th from 5-7 p.m.

Hope you keep having a great month!! ;-)

And of course, let me know if there's something else you'd like me to consider covering in the Saturday sessions.

Mac Classes - May '12

Welcome to May everyone!

Here's hoping you had a wonderful time dancing around the Maypole yesterday! What better way to spend a Monday, eh? On to the class news for the month:

 On Saturday, May 12th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again be offering my popular iPhoto class.

 Then, on Saturday, May 26th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be presenting a new class: Introduction to WordPress. This will definitely be an intro-level class, covering the basics of setting up a new Wordpress site, or administering one that's already set up. For simplicity's sake, I will demonstrate the process available at wordpress.com that allows you to get started with a new blog in minutes, without having to buy a domain name or figure out a host to use. However, migrating your new site to a custom domain/host is easy to do later.

If you've been wondering how difficult it might be to start your own website/blog, and what the process involves, then plan on joining me for this informative session! Again, cost for this class is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. Sign-up is not necessary, drop-ins are welcome!

Lastly...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month that means it happens on Wednesday, May 30th from 5-7 p.m.

Take care everyone, and have a great month!!

And as always, let me know if there's something else you'd like me to consider covering in the Saturday sessions.

WARNING: "Flashback" trojan affecting many Mac users

If you haven't heard or read about it, there have been many reports of late about something called the "Flashback" trojan infecting over a half million Macs worldwide. Flashback is a piece of 'malware' that was first seen in September of 2011. It uses a Java vulnerability to install itself, and does not require user interaction to be installed.

[There are links to read all the gory details of the issue at the bottom of this email, and everything I summarize below is gleaned from those three articles.]

To cut to the chase, I will first describe what to do to make sure you're protected from Flashback, then I will tell you how to tell if you've been infected.

***First, ensure that you've installed the latest Java update, released by Apple this week (via Software Update). The update is called "Apple Java for OS X Lion 2012-002". If Software Update reports that you're up-to-date, it's installed... [If you're running an older operating system, like Leopard (10.5.x) or Tiger (10.4.x), I'm not sure yet if you're even at risk. I will update you as I know more.]

Next, consider turning off Java altogether in Safari. Go to Preferences in Safari, and click on the Security tab, then uncheck the Enable Java checkbox:

UPDATE: Several folks have asked how to disable Java in Firefox. Here are the instructions:

Open Firefox's preferences, go to the General tab, and then click on the "Manage Add-ons..." button in the lower right corner. That will open another Firefox window, showing a list of plug-ins, one of which is the 'Java Applet Plug-in'. Disable that plug-in, and you should be good to go...

«««»»»

To be even more secure (and aside from your browsers), you could disable Java system-wide. I don't recommend this, however, unless you're positive you don't use any Java-based programs (CrashPlan uses Java, for example). If you want to disable it, you will need to go to your Applications folder, find the Utilities folder within it, then a program called Java Preferences. Open that, and uncheck all the boxes under the General tab, as seen below:

***Now, to see if you're infected by Flashback. Again, go to your Applications folder, find the Utilities folder within it, then a program called Terminal. Open it, then follow these steps:

Copy the line below, paste it into the Terminal window and hit return:

defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

If you get this result: "The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist" that is good, but need to check one more thing.

Copy and paste in the following line and hit return:

defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

If you see this result: "The domain/default pair of (/Users/joe/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist" then your system is clean.

***If your machine is infected, you have one of two options:
1) Follow the instructions at this link (which are fairly technical, and again involve use of the Terminal program):

...or...

2) Call me [970-417-8434] and I'll try and walk you through the process over the phone...

Lastly, I've given you several things that you can do to make sure you're protected from this and future Java-based exploits. However, if there's anything we can learn from this entire episode it's that the era of not having to worry at all about malware on a Mac is drawing to a close. Sad but true. At the same time, we're a long way from needing to install anti-virus software on all our Macs. That said, if you feel like you want to install something in the way of an A/V tool on your computer, here are a few options to look at:

ClamXav (free): http://www.clamxav.com/
VirusBarrier X6 ($50): http://www.intego.com/virusbarrier

I hope none of you read too much into all of this. As I said, it certainly doesn't represent some sort of fundamental change in the overall security of your Mac. Apple certainly needs to take a lot of responsibility for the situation, since there was a patch available for the Java exploit for almost two months before they released an updated version. This experience will undoubtably be a wake-up call for the folks at Apple in charge of security updates!
Thanks!
John

Mac Classes - April '12

Happy late April Fools Day! I hope you didn't get fooled too bad... ;-)

I have a crazy schedule this month, so I'm going to squeeze the Saturday classes into the next two weekends, then have a break until the Overview class at the end of the month:

 On Saturday, April 7th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again offer a class on Email & Address Book on your Mac. This class will cover all the intricacies of email and contact-management.

Ever wonder what the Bcc field is for, or how to make an email that looks colorful and professional instead of simple black-on-white text? Have you been frustrated by the complexity of creating Groups in your Address Book, and then struggled to send a message to a large group without having the message fail? This class will cover all that and more... Cost is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. No sign-up necessary; it's open to drop-ins, so come if you can!

 Then, on Saturday, April 14th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will again present an in-depth overview of the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch. In the last several months, the iPhone 4S has been released (now available on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint), a major update to the operating system has come out ("iOS 5") with tons of great new features, and of course the 'new' iPad has just arrived as well.

Whether you've had one of these game-changers for years, are just now jumping on the "iOS" bandwagon with a new iPhone/iPad, or it's simply time for you to find out what the fuss is all about, this class will teach you everything you need to know about these amazing devices. Again, cost for this class is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. Sign-up is not necessary, drop-ins are welcome!

Lastly...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month that means it happens on Wednesday, April 25th from 5-7 p.m.

Take care everyone, and have a great month!!

And as always, let me know if there's something else you'd like me to consider covering in the Saturday sessions.

Mac Classes - March '12

It looks like March is coming in like a Lion, so let's hope that means it'll go out like a lamb! We sure do need the snow though, so I'm not complaining... On to the details:

 On Saturday, March 10th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will once again be offering my popular iPhoto class. Come learn everything there is to know about Apple's powerful digital photo organization/editing program. If you've been thinking that you need to finally get your photo library under control, with the added bonus of learning how easy (and fun) the process can be, this is the class for you! I will be covering both the latest version (iPhoto '11) as well as the previous ('09) version. Cost for this class is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. No sign-up necessary, and it's open to drop-ins, so come if you can!

 Then, on Saturday, March 17th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be offering a new class: Starting a Basic Website or Blog. This will be an intro-level class, covering all the steps to setting up your first "web presence", be it an iWeb website, Wordpress site, or simple blog. I'll cover everything from getting your domain name to finding a hosting service to getting the site/blog set up and published. Due to the complexities of the initial process, there likely won't be time for in-depth instruction on creating and editing your site content, but we will cover the basics. Again, cost for this class is $20, and it will be held at the Ridgway Town Hall. Sign-up is not necessary, drops are welcome!

Lastly...

 Unfortunately I am going to have to cancel this month's regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which normally takes place on the last Wednesday of the month. In March, the 28th is in the middle of spring break week, and I won't be here. No other Wednesday worked with my schedule, so I had to canel. If you were hoping to come, you're just going to have wait until April. Or hire me for some one-on-one time... ;-)

Take care everyone, and have a great month!!

Mac classes - February '12

One month down in the new year already, can you believe it? I know I sound like a broken record, but time sure flies when you're having fun... On to the class news:

 First, on Saturday, February 11th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be revisiting the topic of Social Networking. In this class I will cover Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., etc. The emphasis will be on figuring out how to navigate these wild & crazy new social fads, especially (once again) as more and more changes happen on Facebook & now Google+ as well... At the same time, you'll learn how to maintain the privacy levels we all prefer. If there's interest, I will also cover the ways in which these tools can be put to use in marketing a business. Cost is $20.

 Then, on Saturday, February 18th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will again be offering my popular class on the iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch. Just in the last several months, the iPhone 4S has arrived on the scene (now available on three carriers: AT&T, Verizon andSprint), a major update to the operating system has come out ("iOS 5") with tons of great new features, and of course the popularity of the iPad 2 (not to mention the "iTouch") has shown no sign of slowing. Rumors of the arrival of the iPad 3 are beginning to crop up as well.

Whether you've had one of these game-changers for years, are just now jumping on the "iOS" bandwagon with a new iPhone 4S, or it's simply time for you to find out what the fuss is all about, this class will teach you everything you need to know about these amazing devices... I'll cover the pros and cons of AT&T vs Verizon, all the new features in iOS 5, as well as the secrets of managing what you put on your device via iTunes... I hope you can join us! Cost for this class is $20 as well.

***The above classes are held in the small meeting room at Ridgway Town Hall, and are open to drop-ins, with no sign-up necessary***

Then, don't forget...
 Lastly, the regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class takes place on the last Wednesday of every month, and this month that means it happens on Wednesday, February 29th from 5-7 p.m, again due to the holidays. These overview classes are held in the computer lab at the Ridgway Library. There are only eight seats available, and the Library has asked that I handle the sign ups, so give me a call at 970-417-8434(or drop me an email) if you'd like to attend.

Mac Classes - January '12

Happy New Year! I trust you've all had a peaceful, relaxing first day of 2012... May this year bring you nothing but peace, joy, prosperity & light!

We're back to the regular schedule this month, so there will be two Saturday classes and the regular Library Overview class. On to the details:

 On Saturday, January 14th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will again be offering my popular iPhoto class. Come learn everything there is to know about Apple's amazing digital photo organization/editing program. it will be a great way for you to accomplish that new year's resolution to get your photo library under control, as well as learn how easy (and fun) the process can be! I will be covering both the latest version (iPhoto '11) as well as the previous ('09) version. Cost is $20.

 Then, on Saturday, January 28th, from 10 a.m. to noon, I will be covering Apple's amazing Pages program. In this class you will learn how to master their formidable word-processing/page layout program, which just happens to be a good deal more user-friendly (and fun to use) than Microsoft Word! Cost is $20.

***The above classes are held in the small meeting room at Ridgway Town Hall, and are open to drop-ins, with no sign-up necessary***

Then, don't forget...

 The regular FREE "Overview of Mac OS X" class, which takes place on the last Wednesday of the month. This month it will be Wednesday, January 25th from 5-7 p.m.

As always, let me know if there's something else you'd like me to consider covering in the Saturday sessions.
